Gabriels Fishery Edenbridge, Kent

ADMIRAL LAKE:

Darren Thompson caught a 33lb Mirror on Admiral Lake with Cell bait. A Crowborough Angling member fished the lake through the night and landed a 25lb Carp. It is very likely that this fish will not only be his personal best but also fish of the month as it is a record for the club. Although everyone catches fish, the tactics appear to be overnight on a ledger; in the afternoon when the fish are on the top then surface fishing with either biscuit or bread. Only be sensible when there are birds about.

SILVER LAKE:

Has been producing Tench to about 3½lbs and these have been both Golden Tench as well as Green Tench. All of which have been caught on worm in the margins. Roach at 1 1/2lbs have provided continuous sport in the middle of the lake and at different depths of water. The tactic being: start deep and move the hook closer to the float every ten minutes until there is a positive bite. Get the little ones feeding with ground bait so that their excitement attracts the larger fish. Keep the hook size small so that you learn what fish are about and increase when there is a feeding frenzy. Particles of mixed hemp and sweetcorn make a good ground bait. Feed a little but often around the target bait.

HARE LAKE:

Perch, Chub and Bream have all been caught in the margins and close to the water lilies using sweetcorn, luncheon meat and maggots. Only watch out for the pumpkin seed with their distinctive red dot marking on the gill line. These little fish are caught on maggot within one metre of the edge of the swim. Being a member of the Perch family they are attracted to the large number of small fry which can now be seen swimming close to the lake edge. In fact, on warm mornings there can be seen a continuous black band of small fry almost the entire length of the lake.

OAK LAKE:

Fish flavoured boilies as well as prawn and whelks straight from the supermarket, or was it the sandwich with the prawn cocktail mayonnaise which has been responsible for catching grass carp of 15lbs and 16lbs? Just remember that there are a lot of other species of fish in the water. Alison Brown caught her personal best Bream 4lbs 8oz on Oak Lake when she came to fish with her grandfather who in turn landed a 14lb Common Carp. It was his first fish caught with his retirement present and his first days fishing for eighteen years. His comment was, “It’s great to be able to point out so much colourful wildlife. One big fish and my granddaughter had lots of little ones. The activity for her was constant. I feel really relaxed, I’ll be back to Gabriels".
