Aldi Fishing Events
25th January 2018

Aldi are at it again, this time with some winter gear.
They've really been upping their game in recent years in a very demanding market.
But with their prices being so low on most of their stuff, is it really as good as it seems? I've managed to get hold of a few bits where I will tell you the truth.

Crane Padded Trousers
Price £24.99
Now these are toasty warm! They are very well padded. I used to work in an outside warehouse and they gave us some expensive salopettes which are about £80. These are on par with them.
They come in a couple of colours and are waterproof and windproof (not sure what windproof is).
We all know what the British weather is like, I would def get yaself a pair of these because they will come in very handy throughout the year. The only issue (and it's a tiny one) is they are a bit of a pain to adjust but that will get easier when you get the nack. If you cant find them in store pop online and order from the website www.aldi.co.uk

Crane Padded Fishing Jacket
Price £26.99
Really nice jacket, this is completly waterproof as you would expect. Plenty of pockets and a neck line that you can hide yaself from the world.
I wouldn't say this is toasty warm, I'd say its a mid-season jacket start of winter end of the winter not smack bang in the -5 stuff but for the price you really can't go wrong. Some jackets are getting upwards of £50 these days for something just the same as this.. it looks and feels really nice on and comes in a couple of colours.

Crane Fishing Hoody
Price £12.99
Again for the money very good. This comes in a couple of colours, I have the black one so I can wear it on a regular basis.
It's very warm and quite thick. It comes with pockets at the front and a clever silly little thing...it has holes in the cuffs which will allow you to put ya thumb through to keep some of your hands warm and still sort ya rigs out etc. We all know we end up doing this at some point or another and they've been sewn in so no chance of splitting or fraying.

Thermal Joggers
Price £9.99
These are thick! And if you're doubling these up with the padded trousers, from the waist down you're going to be very toasty. They come in a few colours but they do come up a bit big I noticed. I'm a 34 waist (a medium) and I had to tie them up and they are still a bit baggy. The length is ok. They come in an array of camo and khaki colours.
The only bug bear I can pick up is that some of the fishing trousers have red pockets and front tie, with the tackle tarts out there and all of their camo or khaki colours, I can't see these ones selling that much.

Beanie Hat
Price 3.99
Get one! Really nice hat and it hugs ya head. There are no gaps for the wind to get in and they are thermal lined. I have 2 of these, one for fishing and one for regular use. At £4, it's a must have in the cold.

Neck Warmer
Price 3.99
Not much to say really. Does its job, very warm and will def serve a purpose. Don't worry about looking a goon, by the time the jacket does up you won't even see it.

In conclusion, Aldi have always had some good fishing gear and thankfully more and more people are now realising that you dont have to break the bank to get decent gear whether that be luggage, rods or clothing.
Their winter clothing range is def a hit and I would get on it before they sell out but remember you can go online and order it there.
It only bodes well for future ranges and events and as the years are ticking along, they are evolving and listening to customers and reviews like these by normal everyday fisherman to improve. Well done Aldi...again.
If you have any questions concerning the above clothing please contact me at [email protected]

Aldi Supermarket are attempting to break into the fishing market, with company's such as Fladen and Crane jumping in is it only a matter of time before the supermarkets becomes one of the next big fishing company's?
Aldi Tested
I always put my money where my mouth is soooooo after letting people know about an Aldi fishing event i got bombarded with quotes of "buy cheap buy twice" "its rubbish" "you get what ya pay for" but do you? seemed to me people trying to justify why they spend 100x the amount on fishing gear, I took a few products from this years Aldi range and took it to a well known fishery where i knew it would be fish soup to test the products properly...after catching over 200lb's worth of carp in a few hrs session with carp in to dbl figures here are my findings

Fladen Fishing’s Useful Book of Fishing
This really handy 36 page guide to angling comes with most of the kits and it’s a very informative yet concise guide. It answers all of the most basic questions and more. It really is a fantastic read for beginners who want to know about things like angling etiquette, how to use your equipment and even what methods there are for the various forms of angling. Well worth a read and a really handy addition to the sets.

Polarised Glasses
Price £3.99
I cannot rave enough about these glasses, as with everyone, I too followed the norm of buying brand and paid £25 for my polarised and I was looking for a spare pair when I saw these.
My son calls them x-ray glasses because they cut through the glare of the water lovely and you can see things you wouldn’t normally be able to see from fish to features.
Massively recommend these and at this price I’d say grab yourself a couple of pairs for your mates also.

Neoprene Gloves
Price £4.99
I’ve got both the fingerless and the normally gloves and to be honest I can’t fault them. The straight gloves have an option to bend over the thumb and forefinger to allow you to tie rigs etc. They are very comfy and warm and they’re not too bulky allowing you to grip properly.
A fiver? Cheap as chips, grab some.

Crane Fishing Shelter Bivvy
Price £19.99
Bit of a mixed review on this really, I’ll start with the good bits. For the price you can’t go wrong, it’s a very decent little shelter. The height of the shelter is very good also, sometimes you get the day shelters and they are very small on the height.
It comes with a ground sheet as well which other day shelters don’t.
The bad points are the instructions are pointless I was there for a very long time trying to put this shelter up as they are not very well explained. It’s a basic 3 pole system, two small, one large but even with that simple system it took an age, obviously the more you use it the easier it will get but the first few times brace yourself.
Also as you will see in the picture the front two poles stick out about half an inch, which if one of my kids was walking past and they catch themselves could cause a nasty cut they really need to have a couple of little plastic cups on the end. As with a lot of bivvys/shelters these days even the expensive ones come with really small or flimsy pegs this shelter is no exception so I would advise buying some decent tent pegs.
see attached.
But for the price it’s definitely work a look.

Field Boots
Price £12.99
Again I have a pair of these boots and as with a lot of their gear I can’t fault these either.
I’ve had these boots over a year now they do what they are supposed to do, they are water tight and very comfy. They are fleece lined at the top and for the winter are lovely but not too hot that you can’t use them in the summer. For that price grab some because they are not cheap to buy elsewhere.

Fishing Bag
Price £10.99
As with all luggage people always ask is their actually that much difference in quality? Don’t get me wrong some may have a better branding and extra pockets etc. but for the most not really.
These bags are very well made, the zips are sturdy, the material isn’t flimsy and it doesn’t look or feel cheap.
This has loads of different compartments and at 11 quid it’s cheap. If you’re in the market for a bag to hold all your bits and bobs this is it.

Fladen Float Rod & Reel
Price £19.99
I didn’t hold out much luck for this three piece 11ft float rod and reel, but I was very much mistaken.
I took this little set up to a very well-known, well stocked fishery to test this set up and after a few hrs I had already brought in over 200lb’s worth of Carp, all from 5-12lb and this rod and reel made very easy work of it.
I used different methods with this rod, from float fishing, light and heavy method feeding and ledgering and it stood up well to all of them.
The reel is very small & front drag which is loaded with 3lb line, the 3lb line sounds light to some people but trust me if you let the rod do the work and set your clutch properly you will have no problems I would have been very happy to play fish bigger than the 12lb I had with this rod.
The action of the rod was very good and cushioned any little shakes and dives by the fish.
The only tiny, tiny thing I could whinge at is the line could have been spooled with a bit more line but to be honest that’s just being picky.
For £20 It’s well worth the money.

Fladen Fishing Accessory Sets
Price £4.99
A mixed bag here, there are three sets;
A feeder set.
A float fishing set.
And a Carp accessories set.
The float fishing set comprises of a massive selection of floats of all different sizes colours and weights. There is more than enough and the very sturdy tube it’s held in is a very handy thing to have to keep them all nice and neat with no chance of damage. Also in this set are disgorgers, float rings/rubbers, float adapters, a tiny pot of shot (very tiny, buy a separate one) and some size 14 & 16 hooks to nylon.
The shot is a bit pointless really there is a very small amount probably only about 5 or 6 so you will need to stock up. The hooks supplied are sharp and are attached to nylon for easy attachment. It’s a good job really as they are spade end and I know kids these days would not have a clue how to tie them.
A fiver? Good value I think as there is so many different types of floats in here that I can’t really ever see you buying any more, you wouldn’t need to.
The feeder set is a good little set actually, it comes with 4 different feeders and a feeder mould. I was using the feeder mould whilst using their float rod and it didn’t miss a beat. Sometimes you get the moulds that get too sticky. All the feeders seemed well made.
A fiver? I’m sure you can get feeders separately on eBay cheaper but this will save you searching all over the net, and weighing up the postage costs etc.
The Carp set comes with about 10 bits, including a nice feeder, a lead weight, some rigs, baiting needles, rubber corn, bubble float, some cones, rig tubing etc.
Apart from the baiting needles that feel apart with the 1st use (the needle bit fell out, it was well glued because the glue was still attached to the needle bit) which was a shame because the size of them was lovely.
The bubble float looks and feels very flimsy and cheap.
The rest of the little set all works very well and is of decent quality, the basic rigs inside will definitely do the job, they held up very well to everything I put them through. I tie my own rigs and although they weren’t up to my personal standard they did the job and they are fine.
I also make my own lead weights for fishing, so I’m afraid the lead weight is not up to my standard. I use a powder coat system but this felt rubbery, also the top of the rubber was missing exposing lead (well I can’t say its lead becuase I’m unsure of the material) BUT going on the understanding it is lead these leads really need to be looked at more because the coating came off far too easily. I didn’t use this lead and I advise you not to, if you want another lead pop around my house and I’ll give you one lol.
The rubber corn was fine two different colours, red and yellow and different sizes.
Rig tubbing had three different colours and was also fine.
I can’t help thinking that a fiver is a bit steep to be honest and it is cheap there’s no getting away from it but with the lead surplus to requirements and the baiting needles pointless, you’re actually only paying for 5/6 items, I wouldn’t bother personally.

Fladen Landing Net
Price £6.99
Love this little net, so much so I bought one, bulked all my gear up then soon realised I need a little net for the smaller fish and bought another one.
I’ve not had any problems with this net, it has a very sturdy handle that extends to over 2m and it also folds up nice and neat to put away. This is not a sophisticated bit of kit so not much to say on it really only to say 7quid? BARGAIN! Grab one, they are very handy.

Maximum Attraction Baits & Particles
Price £2.99
This is going to upset some people. Bait these days has gone very scientific with big debates as a result. Is paying up to £12 a kilo too much? Now this is a massively personal choice, with the influx of particle and pellet being used these days all the major companies are making a fortune.
£2.99 for particle or ground bait or pop up and glugs? It must be shocking quality”. You’re very wrong. Their particle mixes are amazingly good. They have the normal corn/maize, hemp, flavoured sweetcorn as well as different size pellet which is high attraction and again is amazingly good. Their boilies come in a variety of flavours and I know a fair few people that have caught plenty of decent fish on them. Their glugs smell lush and seem to add an extra edge.
I for one will have my nose pressed up against the door on Sunday for this outrageously cheap bait.

Fladen Bait accessories - catapult/spod feeder/PVA bags
Price £2.99
The catapult looks and feels a bit cheap but to be honest I can’t fault it. I went to town on this item applying proper match tactics every 20 seconds and it didn’t miss a beat all day. Obviously, I’d have to use it more to see if it withstands that throughout the year but did the job very well when I used it.
Spod feeder does what it says on the tin. Very well made bit of kit and doesn’t have that cheap polystyrene in the bottom. This has a solid block in the bottom and held up very well.
The PVA comes in packs of 25 and for the modern day fisherman they are very big but you can cut them down and just lick the sides. They are oil and glug friendly and the break down time is about 10-15 seconds so you can at least wait until it hits the bottom before your bag explodes.

Fladen Buzz Bar/Bite Alarms/Swingers
Price £6.99
I didn’t hold out much hope for these as the picture in the magazine and web shows the buzz bars bent.
I used them all day, they are hollow and not solid but they did very well and I was surprised.
They seemed sturdy and bulky and I gave them a bit of abuse to test them out and they held up well.
The only bug bear would be the screw nuts at the top. They were massive but that’s me just being picky.
The swingers actually look lovely. Nice little chain and a very lightweight small attachment to the line. One problem, I couldn’t hook it on the line! I tightened the screw up as tight as I could go and it was still too big. It just wouldn’t attach. If they can sort this out I’m sure they will be onto a winner here but as it is don’t bother, they don’t do what they are supposed to.
The bite alarms. Now these are basic alarms but held up to the job very well, nice and simple not fandangledness here and it was actually a refreshing change. They turn on and off and the volume button changes the sound of the alarm.
The wheel held up very well, I even chucked a little water over them and they continued to work (don’t try this at home kids, just because they worked for me doesn’t mean they will for you #justsaying) but for 7 quid these are perfect for people who watch the pennies.
The only bug bear, the battery. Now every alarm I know use’s AAA batteries. Not these beauties! They use a 23A 12V. After searching all over the place I actually found some in the Pound Shop of all places and also the little door to get to the battery can be a little fiddly but most definitely worth the money when you see people spending £200 on a single alarm it kinda makes you think….it’s the same technology!

Beachcaster Rod and Reel Combo
£19.99
What a lovely bit of kit. This three piece 12ft rod comes with a pre-spooled big pit reel with 15lb line.
As I live next to the Thames (estuary end known for flatties and Bass) I decided why not, attached a 3.5oz weight to it and proceeded to test the durability of the reel and rod and it did not miss a beat. It has a very smooth cast out and a smooth retrieve. It doesn’t look or feel cheap. It’s nice and bulky and for the money very good.
Only thing I can think to moan at is it’s slightly under-spooled but that’s a tiny issue, I kinda think they are missing a trick with this rod actually. If they put 50mm butt rings all the way through this rod, this would make a very good marker and spod rod for the carp boys. The casting was very good.
Yes it’s blue but they cant see it whilst ya casting you know, think about that whilst you've got green camo on whilst fishing in the snow ;o)
In Conclusion:
Your paying to much for your fishing gear lol, granted their was the odd bit that wasn't up to the standard, BUT 90% of the gear i used stood up to the challenge and more some at a fraction of the cost, as i said over 200lbs worth or carp that day and i never had a issue at any point...and on 3lb line..yes 3lb! so the next time your struggling to bring in a dbl figure fish on your £100 3.5lb test curve rod with your £100 reel and 15lb line have a word with yourself
