The explosion of colour and life around the lake in the last few weeks has been a little short of amazing, trees are blossoming, we have had a gorgeous Daffodil presence and now the blue bells are bursting through the lush vegetation providing wonderful areas of blue carpet. Just wonderful. The fishing has kept pace with the ‘emergence’ of spring and there have been some fantastic catches both in the organized competitions that have taken place and by the increasing numbers of visiting pleasure anglers. Billy and Kevin fished a 24hr session over the Easter bank holiday. Kevin had the lions share of the spoils, fishing into a small bay near to the fishing lodge area of the lake. He landed landed six Carp up to 15lb along with three decent Bream. Steve dropped in after one of the open matches and fished peg 7 as this had not been used during the match. He was quickly rewarded with an 11lb Common that fell to salty squid wafts. Anyone doubting the ability of match anglers to catch specimen sized fish should perhaps, think again. Here with two outstanding Roach are matchmen Trevor Hoad and Peter Gabbitas. The venues top ‘carp rod’ through the winter months, John has enjoyed many successful visits to the venue through this period. His perseverance through the tougher conditions has seen him rewarded with some wonderful fish. On his latest visit he nailed five Carp all in mint condition and all around the 10lb stamp. This was bettered still with his capture of a stunning 14lb Mirror. All his fish were taken on 18mm boilie baits fished over towards the far bank features with a light scattering of around 20 loose baits per fish – great angling. The last match of the current season was held on Sunday April 12th. As has become the custom, this was a very close affair and one that produced a fine winning bag of feeder caught fish for Lewis Nigthingale. Lew (winning his second open on the venue) fished the method feeder from peg 17 into the open water. He was soon into quality Bream around the 3lb stamp and he continued in the same vane through the duration of the contest. At the weigh-in he placed a fine bag of bream along with one quality 3lb 4oz Crucian to give him the winning weight of 40lb 10oz. With his Bream weight of 37lb 6oz being the best Silvers bag he also scooped the silvers purse. Well done Lew top angling. He was chased all the way by Mark Hathway. Mark fishing peg 16 on the pole placed a fine combined Silvers/Carp bag of 38lb on the scales and (for the third match in succession) finished second with Mark Nevins 31lb 7oz good enough for third. The section money was claimed by Trevor Hoad and Anthony Page. The matches have been a great success and all at the fishery thank the loyal and regular support of all those that attended from October 2014 - April 2015. Match fishing will return again on October 4th 2015 were there are plans for a winter silverfish championship amongst others. With the settled weather blessing us we are making good time on the refurbishment of the lakeside lodge and this should be open to all shortly. New facilities will include, toilets, shower, along with a breakfast bar and new drink and snack making facilities - all to help make your stay at the venue all the more enjoyable.
