Chalk Springs, Arundel, West Sussex
It’s been another excellent month for fishing although the weather has been a bit mixed again. The water is nice and clear again now and as you can see by the catch rate which has been around the 80% mark, the fishing continues to be consistent. The best flies have been goldhead damsels, cat’s whiskers and bloodworms - all fished fairly deep, although more recently buzzers and dries have been working, especially on the sunnier days. One or two mayflies have already started to hatch as well. Rainbows to just over 10lb and Browns to just over 8lb were among the best caught, with an overall average size of well over 2 1/2lb. Once again, the hard-fighting qualities of our Devon strain rainbows is being regularly commented on. The fishing should continue to be good through May as the spring water is keeping the lakes cool and crystal clear. The annual April Fools competition was held at the beginning of the month, actually falling on April Fools Day for the first time in years. As usual, the competitors are drawn out of the hat in pairs, the object of the day being to catch the largest combined weight of eight fish. It was a sunny, but fresh day, with a northerly wind keeping things a bit on the cool side. The fishing was excellent from the word go, with everyone pulling out fish left, right and centre! After the fish and chips for lunch, fishing continued until 3 o’clock, when the weigh-in revealed that the winners were Paddy Hill and Chris Croucher, with a winning weight of 27lb 4oz for their eight fish. Kevin Hunt and Adrian Austin were second with 21lb 12oz with Martin Stone and Brian Kentish in third with 19lb 5oz. As always, keep up to date with the ‘weekly catch’ page on the website and pre-booking is always advised. Tight Lines.
